Training Your Dog

by Mark Tipton

Q: What if your dog is digging or otherwise destroying the yard?

A: You need to give your dog a job to do if your dog doesn’t already have one. Otherwise, they are “self-employed” and will act as your gardener. Teach your dog the “find it” game. Give your dog a frozen Kong, raw, meaty bone and chew toys.

Q: What do you do if your dog is getting out of the yard?

A: Prevention and management. Make sure all gates are secured and locked, if any repairs are needed to be done to the fence. Is your dog fixed? If not, he or she may want to find a mate. Make the backyard a fun place to be.

You can also teach boundary training to stay in the yard, even if the gate is open, unless you have invited the dog to the other side.
